What you can Fly fish for
There are many fish found in the offshore fly fishing waters of Islamorada that are available to target with a fly rod. Our favorites to target are Mahi-Mahi, Kingfish, Bonita, and Sailfish for those of you with an adventurous spirit. However, Tuna and certain species of Jacks, as well as Cobia, are options when they are around.
The most fishing friendly of these fish available for all skill levels would be the Mahi. They are typically a very hungry and aggressive fish, and they are not very picky about what they are eating. This makes them an ideal target for those of you looking to hook into an offshore species on fly tackle. Mahi are commonly found in Islamorada from late April through August.
Looking for an Offshore fly fishing challenge?
Sailfish on fly is a challenge, but it is extremely exciting, even when you are unsuccessful at getting one caught on the hook. When we fish for sailfish with fly tackle, we slow troll live (hookless) Ballyhoo. When the Sailfish comes up behind the boat, you let them get just a mere taste of the Ballyhoo and then you take it away from them. You do this by winding quickly and bringing him to the back of the boat & into ‘fly range’. As the Ballyhoo is snatched from the water, the fly is presented simultaneously. The Sailfish is under the impression that the fly is actually the Ballyhoo that has been eluding them. Sailfish bites are ferocious and right behind the boat! It is an extremely exciting and rewarding accomplishment.
Sailfish are available from late October through February and sometimes through March and April.
