More about Reef Fishing
We usually are in water between 30-100″ deep when reef fishing. We will normally just anchor up and start a chumming.
The Yellowtail Snapper will be found around half way down and are found in schools of hundreds or occasionally even thousands of fish. To catch them, we use a technique called free lining witch is simply feeding line out and drifting the pieces of cut bait through the area we chummed, called the chum slick. The bait slowly sinks toward the bottom, right through the school of Yellowtail Snapper.
The Mutton and Mangrove Snapper, and all species of Grouper, are living on the bottom or very close to it. These fish are caught using a leaded rig and a long fluorocarbon leader. We use live bait, dead bait, or larger pieces of cut bait for these bottom rigs.
More about Wreck Fishing
With wreck fishing, the wrecks are where you find the bigger Snapper and Grouper. This is also where you will find several species of Amberjack, or just ‘jack’ as most refer to them as. The largest of these would be the Greater Amberjack sometimes getting as big as 100 pounds or more.
hanging around in the waters around the deep wrecks are the ‘Lunkers’ of the Florida Keys fish called Goliath grouper. They may look really fat & slow, but they can surprise you with how fast they can move when a nice meal is nearby. Finally, let’s not forget about the several species of large sharks around these wrecks.
Wreck fishing can be a very exciting type of fishing. It can be very visually stimulating for everyone in the family as well as a good workout for the person holding the rod.
You can end up with a number of different types of gamefish as well as some tasty fish.
The Famous Islamorada Sandbar
After having fun doing some reef or wreck fishing it might be time to relax at the Islamorada sandbar. Either way, we have rafts, music, and plenty of ice to keep your drinks cool! The Sandbar can add some incredibly relaxing time on the water!
